Katharine Merry began her career at the Birchfield Harriers athletics club. At the age of 12 she topped the UK under 13 rankings in 7 different events. At the age of 13 she started her international GB career, and stayed on the junior team for 6 years, which included 5 Junior Championships, winning 6 medals. At the age of 14 she was the fastest girl in the world. She leveraged her senior athletics career by winning bronze in the Olympic Games, held in Sydney in 2000. Katharine still remains in third place on the UK All Time 400m list, with her record-breaking time of 49.59 seconds.
Katharine announced her official retirement from athletics in 2005, after never really recovering from two bone spur growth operations on her right heel bone. She now works freelance in radio and TV. She has worked in Beijing, London and Rio at the Olympics for the BBC. Katharine also was the lead field event commentator for the Channel 4 coverage of the Paralympic Games in 2012.
