Glucosamine: All you need to know

Latest articles

Glucosamine is a naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan that is found in high concentrations in the joints throughout the body. Glycosaminoglycans are considered to be the building blocks of the joints.

The body uses glucosamine to produce chemicals that are involved in building cartilage, tendons, ligaments and joint fluid.

Glucosamine supplements are available in many different forms, the most common form is glucosamine sulphate 2KCl. Glucosamine hydrochloride HCl is a more premium option that is manufactured from an environmentally sustainable corn base, is suitable for vegetarians and is free from allergens (such as shellfish) which are associated with other glucosamine supplements. Importantly, glucosamine hydrochloride provides 40% more 'usable' glucosamine per gram.

The potential benefits of glucosamine

Most research into glucosamine has focussed on the beneficial role it offers arthritis sufferers. Whilst it is certainly not a cure for arthritis it has been shown to provide significant relief from pain and inflammation. The beneficial effects of glucosamine in arthritis sufferers would suggest that it has a role to play for athletes also, particularly those who participate in sports that increase the risk of joint injury, a risk factor for the development of arthritis.

Glucosamine may also provide some protection against the 'wear and tear' suffered by the joints during sports with studies in cyclists and soccer players showing particularly positive results.

How much Glucosamine should I take?

A daily intake of 1,500mg of glucosamine is recommended. Glucosamine is often taken alongside Chondroitin which offers synergistic benefits. When taken together experts recommend a daily intake of 1,500mg glucosamine and 1,200mg chondroitin.

When should I take Glucosamine?

Glucosamine can be taken at any time of day so long as it is taken regularly. The benefits of glucosamine build up over time and nutrition experts recommend taking it consistently for up to 3 months before you begin to feel the full benefit.
