How Much Protein Do You Actually Need?

UK dietary guidelines recommend 0.75g of protein per kg of bodyweight daily - about 56g for men and 45g for women. But if you play sports or are an athlete, your protein needs increase to between 1.2-2g per kg of bodyweight per day. Most protein powders contain 20-25g of protein per serving, so depending on your diet, you may only need 1-2 scoops of protein powder a day to reach your target. Our protein powders provide between 21-28g of protein per serving, depending on the product. Not sure where to start with protein powders? Here’s a quick guide to the Healthspan Elite protein powder range, so you can find the best fit for your needs.

Whey Protein Powder

Ultimate Whey Protein Powder and Clear Whey Protein Powder are excellent choices to boost your daily protein intake.

Ultimate Whey Protein Powder, available in a 750g bag, delivers 24g of protein per serving from a blend of whey protein concentrate and isolate, plus 5.7g of naturally occurring branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs). Clear Whey Protein Powder contains 21g of hydrolysed whey protein isolate and 5.3g of BCAAs per serving. The main difference between the two is the type of whey protein used. Whey protein concentrate contains around 70-80% protein with some lactose and fat. Whey protein isolate is more refined, with approximately 90% protein and minimal lactose or fat. Hydrolysed whey protein isolate, used in Clear Whey Protein Powder, is broken down further for faster absorption and a lighter texture.

Because of this, Ultimate Whey Protein Powder mixes into a smooth, milkshake-style protein shake, while Clear Whey Protein Powder dissolves into water, creating a refreshing, juice-like drink, perfect if you want something lighter and more hydrating.

Both come in a range of flavoured protein powders: choose chocolate, strawberry, or vanilla with Ultimate Whey Protein Powder, or orange and mango with Clear Whey Protein Powder. Mix with your favourite liquid and enjoy.

Mass / Weight Gainer Protein Powders

For serious muscle growth, Mass Gain Protein Blend is your go-to. It combines high-quality protein with a rich carbohydrate complex to help you increase daily calorie intake for effective weight gain and muscle building.

Each 125g serving delivers 28g of protein from a premium whey concentrate and isolate blend, along with 78g of carbohydrates sourced from Carb10™ (a balanced carb from pea starch), maltodextrin, and oat flour.

The protein supports muscle recovery and growth, while the carbohydrate blend replenishes glycogen stores, fuels workouts, and promotes healthy weight gain. By providing energy from carbs this formula also helps preserve protein stores during intense training, so more protein is available for building lean muscle.

Vegan Protein Powder

If you follow a vegetarian or vegan diet, are lactose intolerant, or prefer plant-based protein powders, we also offer Plant Protein Vegan Blend a dairy-free option that contains no whey and sources protein from plants. Available in vanilla, chocolate, and unflavoured, this blend combines pea, brown rice, and pumpkin seed protein. It’s low in sugar, contains no artificial sweeteners, and uses natural Stevia for sweetness. Each serving delivers 23g of vegan protein and 4.1g of BCAAs, comparable to our whey options: Ultimate Whey Protein Powder has 24g per serve, and Clear Whey Protein Powder has 21g per serving.

Award-Winning Protein Powders

Not many protein powders can brag about winning awards, but Ultimate Whey Protein Powder won the Men’s Fitness Best Whey Protein award in 2024. Plus, our entire range is developed in partnership with the All Blacks, New Zealand’s Rugby Team, a collaboration that began in 2015 and became official in 2020 with the launch of the All Blacks sports nutrition range.

Working closely with All Blacks nutritionist Kat Darry, we create supplements that meet elite performance standards while helping everyday consumers achieve their fitness goals.
