What is sodium bicarbonate?
Sodium bicarbonate is a well-researched natural compound with powerful acid-buffering properties. During high-intensity exercise, the muscles produce acid that contributes to fatigue. Sodium bicarbonate helps maintain a more optimal muscle pH, enabling athletes to perform harder for longer. It is most effective for short-duration, high-intensity activities that rely heavily on anaerobic energy systems. This includes sprint events (typically 200–800 metres), CrossFit® and functional fitness, and HIIT or circuit-style training. It can also benefit athletes performing any high-effort activity lasting approximately one to seven minutes. For best results, sodium bicarbonate is typically taken 1–2 hours after a meal (such as breakfast) and 1.5-2 hours before high-intensity training or competition.
